Got Drugs? Return Prescriptions on National Drug Take Back Day

April 29, 2016

The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 52 million people in the United States over the age of 12 have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons in their lifetime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asserts that 40 Americans die every day from a prescription painkiller overdose. Given the high number of opioid abuse, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration established the National Take-Back Initiative.

April 30 is National Drug Take Back Day. Participating law enforcement agencies will host collection boxes, where individuals can clean their cabinets and anonymously drop off their unused, expired, or surplus prescription drugs.

  • What: National Drug Take Back Day
  • Where: A location near you
  • When April 30, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Afraid you won’t be able to make it at that time? Don’t worry. The State of New Jersey and the Office of the Attorney General worked together to create Project Medicine Drop. Encouraged by the success of the DEA’s Take-Back Initiative, the state’s Division of Consumer Affairs furthers the commitment to combat prescription painkiller addiction. New Jerseyans can return unused or expired prescription medication any time of the day, every day of the year. Participating locations accept solid medication such as pills, patches, etc. Authorities will then use the appropriate procedure to dispose of the prescriptions.

At Turning Point, we are dedicated to helping individuals break free from addiction. It is a disease that afflicts too many Americans. We commend the nation for offering programs such as the Take–Back initiative, but we know more work needs to be done to prevent painkiller addiction. If you or a loved one suffers from a dependency on prescription drugs, contact our New Jersey drug rehab center. We offer different programs such as detox, rehab, outpatient treatment, halfway homes, and more. Call today to request admission and take the first steps to reclaiming your life.
