Alcohol Awareness Month: What You Need to Know About Alcohol Addiction

Society labels alcohol as the drink of choice when someone needs to unwind, celebrate, or forget their worries. It is a common beverage found in many restaurants and households. While okay in moderation, alcohol can easily become addictive. Those imbibing should take care not to form a dependency on the drink. Unfortunately, too many individuals form an addiction to alcohol.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate an average of 17.6 million Americans suffer from alcohol abuse. Of those, approximately 88,000 die from it. That translates to roughly six individuals dying every day from alcohol abuse. At Turning Point, we believe that number is too high. That is why we want to use April, Alcohol Awareness Month, to inform readers of the far-reaching effects of this dependency.

Alcohol addiction statistics from this past year include:

  • Three out of four alcohol-poisoning deaths happen to adults between the ages of 35 to 64 and commonly happen in men. (CDC)
  • American Indians / Alaska Natives most often die because of alcohol poisoning.
  • 100,000 individuals die from alcohol-related accidents such as drunk driving, fires, falls, and alcohol-induced suicide / homicides. (NCAAD)
  • Approximately 3.9 million Americans are treated for substance abuse annually, 2.5 million users being treated for alcohol abuse. (Drug Free World)
  • Kids who start drinking at a young age are seven times more likely to form an alcohol addiction. (MADD)
  • Alcohol is the third leading cause of lifestyle-related deaths in America. (NIAAA)
  • The United States spends an average of $199 billion every year because of drunk driving costs. (MADD)
