Opioid Reversal Drug Naloxone Given for Free in New Jersey

Turning Point

In an effort to combat the opioid epidemic and prevent overdose fatalities in New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy has launched a program that distributes free doses of Naloxone in pharmacies statewide. On June 18, people who want the opioid reversal drug will be able to anonymously obtain it at no cost and without a prescription or appointment. Of the 200 pharmacies across New Jersey, 2 are in Brick and the medication will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. As drug deaths continue their meteoric rise across the nation, the state of New Jersey seems to be getting worse with over 3,000 overdoses last year.

What is Naloxone & How Does It Work?

Naloxone can be injected or administered via nasal spray and studies have associated it with a reduction in opioid overdose deaths without any unintentional side effects, like drug dependence. Also known by its brand name Narcan, it works quickly to bind opioid receptors in the brain. When administered correctly, it can restore normal breathing and reverse an overdose within 2 to 5 minutes. The Department of Health facilitates free naloxone rescue kits and training for at-risk individuals and their loved ones. The Attorney General has also noted the benefits of this medication as Naloxone was administered more than 16,000 times last year in New Jersey alone.

The Opioid Overdose Recovery Program

Governor Murphy is optimistic about the effectiveness of this program to prevent the opioid epidemic from continuing to plague families and communities at an alarming rate. This progressive initiative stands to save the lives of countless individuals struggling with opioid addiction who are not in the financial position to seek this critical medication or are otherwise hesitant to seek help for fear of being judged. Created through the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy, the program includes chains like Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid.

The Brick pharmacies offering this life-saving medication for free are CVS at 989 Burnt Tavern Road and Walmart at 1872 Route 88. For a complete list of the participating pharmacies, click here.
