What Are the Benefits of Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment?

Turning Point

Seek the Freedom & Empowerment of Effective Outpatient Substance Use Treatment

Getting clean and sober from drug addiction is daunting enough, but it can be even more worrisome thinking you’ll have to pack your bags and leave home to do it. There is another way: outpatient addiction rehab. Many patients thrive in outpatient treatment services, especially if they don’t want to put their career or personal responsibilities on hold while in treatment. Other patients are best suited for outpatient services as part of their continuum of care, or after they have already attended a residential treatment program and feel they need the structure offered by an outpatient program.

You may opt for outpatient treatment services for the following reasons:

  • Cost: Outpatient costs less than residential treatment programs, as you are not paying for room or board.
  • Freedom: You will be able to live at home and continue to go to work and/or school.
  • Privacy: You won’t have to explain a long period of absence from home to your boss, coworkers, friends, or acquaintances.

Outpatient treatment is not a lower-quality treatment, but a different treatment model than inpatient treatment. It is an equally valid type of addiction treatment.

How Is Outpatient Different from Inpatient Rehab?

The obvious difference between these two types of addiction treatment programs is that inpatient requires patients to live at the treatment facility for the duration of their treatment program. The opposite is outpatient, where patients come to the facility on a part-time basis only and continue to live at home. Inpatient programs have a much more rigid structure, but the round-the-clock medical and emotional support can prove invaluable for those in the very early stages of their recovery who need to separate themselves from their destructive influences or daily temptation.

Outpatient programs are appropriate for many patients who don’t want to disrupt their daily lives and take time away from work, school, or family obligations. While outpatient drug addiction treatment works wonders for many individuals who are self-disciplined and away from harmful influences. Those who have a history of chronic relapse may need more support than the structure of an outpatient program provides.
