About Anderson House

Helping Women Transition to Sober Living

Anderson House logoAnderson House is a well-respected halfway house program serving women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction and their co-occurring mental health disorders. Anderson House serves women from all New Jersey counties. Our transition homes are licensed by the state of NJ and meet all applicable state regulations

  • Our Mission is to provide quality treatment to women and help them develop the life skills and goal-building techniques they need to return to the community as responsible, sober, and productive individuals.
  • Our Vision is to broaden and enhance our programs and facilities so that we can accommodate and treat more women with addictions with the excellence they so deserve.

Why We Help

We are here because the need is so great.

An estimated 400,000 female residents of New Jersey are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Approximately 10% or 40,000 of these women need long-term residential treatment in order to successfully overcome their disease and regain their lives. Yet, there are only 224 halfway house beds for women in the entire state of New Jersey.

Anderson House is committed to serving all women regardless of their ability to pay. Everyone at Anderson House is dedicated to making it the premier program in the state. We take great pride in the work we do helping women build new lives for themselves and their children.

Whether you are seeking addiction treatment for yourself, a loved one, or a client, Anderson House can help.

Together with our dedicated staff, we help women build new lives and make long-term recovery a reality. And every day we celebrate the courage and commitment of the women we serve.

The Background of Halfway Houses

In 2001, a report commissioned by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, entitled “Substance Abuse, The Nation’s Number One Health Problem,” described addiction as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that affects Americans from all walks of life. The report revealed substance abuse causes more deaths, illnesses, and disabilities than any other preventable health condition and places an enormous burden on society.

Years later, the National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University released more than a decade of research in a book entitled, Women Under the Influence (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2006). The organization found:

  • Women become addicted to alcohol and other drugs (both prescription and illegal) faster and at lower dosage levels than men.
  • Many women recovering from addiction suffer from low self-esteem, guilt, shame, and mental disorders like depression and anxiety.

These conditions make recovery more difficult for women and put them at higher risk of relapse. For many women, recovery is a long-term process and 28-day rehabilitation programs are not enough.

These women need long-term treatment in a structured, caring environment like Anderson House.

How We Help

Anderson House is dedicated to providing the highest quality halfway house treatment to help women build solid foundations for sober, productive, and happy futures. While we accept all clients, Anderson House frequently serves women who are homeless and/or cannot afford to pay for their care. No matter where our clients come from, we help them fund their treatments and make sure their care meets and exceeds that of for-profit programs.
